Thank you for your Interest in Joining Grant County Search and Rescue
If you would like to learn more about Grant County Search and Rescue, with the possibility of applying for membership, please contact secretary@gcsar-nm.org. You can also attend one of our monthly meetings to receive more information.
Our meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of every month. We meet at 6:30 pm at the Silver City Annex building at 1203 N Hudson Street, Silver City, NM 88061on the second floor.
Following our meeting we hold an hour long training session each month on a variety of topics. Every other month on the Saturday following our meeting, we hold a outdoor training session. These sessions usually are focused on team members practicing with our equipment or even holding a mock search to allow us to learn from one another and improve our skills.
If you decide to join Grant County Search and Rescue, you will be assigned a mentor to help you through the process of becoming a certified New Mexico Search and Rescue team member.
The members of GCSAR come from all walks of life and various occupations and have a wide range of interests, experience levels and resources to offer the team. We all have a common goal of enjoying the outdoors and a willingness to help others in need.
A common misconception is that volunteers must have technical skills or medical training to become a SAR member. While we use canines, horses, ATVs, and mountain climbing teams as the need arises, most searches are conducted by “ground-pounders,” volunteers who put on a pack and hike the trails, arroyos, stream beds, and other likely locations to find a person in need. We also utilize volunteers who work from home as “dispatchers” to call out personnel, and support members who may drive food, water, and other supplies to Incident Base to re-supply field teams.
